Commonweal

With a diverse 50 year history in the nonprofit space— Commonweal reached out early 2023 to begin their brand and website overhaul. The Commonweal build required 6 months of intensive, process-oriented build time, multiple on-site workshops and observational trips, new models, IP, and organizational methods to properly explore and expand Who Commonweal Is and What Commonweal Does.

A Porous Vessel

The RFP for Commonweal requested building a Brand Identity and Website that operated like a porous vessel. A Brand and Website that conveys 50 years of nonprofit support, 25+ programs ranging from Healing and Liberation to Prison Hospice, and Cancer Retreats.

  • Commonweal is both a physical and digital place, with deep roots in both
  • Commonweal is innovative, caring, supportive, and emergent
  • Commonweal holds a rich (and vocal) background

Our Distributed Team:

  • Michael Lerner, Co-Founder, Commonwweal
  • Oren Slozberg: Executive Director, Commonweal
  • Susan Grelock-Yusem: Director of Narrative, Commonweal
  • Kyra Epstein, Director of The New School, Communications Manager, Commonweal
  • Brandon Roth, Director of Design & Digital Product Owner, Independent Contractor
  • Neil M. Yarnal, Creative Director & Principal Brand Designer, Local* LLC
  • The Wonderful People @ Commonweal
Goal

The Who Behind The Why

Getting to know Commonweal; who runs the organization, who supports the organization, who the place of Commonweal is, who the 50+ Program Directors are... The Who Model was used within every aspect of the Commonweal.org build.

  • The Who Model helped break apart standard Brand refresh roles, processes, patterns, and behaviors
  • The Who Model helped Commonweal uncover new organizational structures, models, and IP
  • The Who Model helped the people who make up Commonweal rediscover Who They Are and What They Do
Solution

The Intuitive Toolkit

The Intuitive Toolkit is nested within Visual Identity Systems (VIS). When paired with Commonweal's pre-existing Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS), the two create a powerful (and intuitive) format for creating and experiencing Commonweal's Identity across commonweal.org.

  • Working from the inside out, The Intuitive Toolkit was used, in real-time to study and build for natural work methods
  • A reversal of process; The Intuitive Toolkit was built the last week of our 6 month process; using the prior 6 months to stress-test all possible outcomes
  • The Intuitive Toolkit is simple; providing all Commonweal Identity Users with the same tools to create with by encouraging authentic intuition
